Summer Camp 2019 – Camp Alexander

We will be attending Camp Alexander in the Rocky Mountains this year, a favorite summer camp of Troop 848.  We will leave Houston on the evening of July 20 (Saturday), and arrive at Camp Alexander the afternoon of July 21.  The summer camp program runs from July 21 to July 26.  We leave the camp after the closing campfire Friday night July 26 and arrive back at the church the afternoon of Saturday July 27.

 

Camp Alexander is a nationally accredited camp by the Boy Scouts of America.  Camp A is located in the beautiful Elevenmile Canyon in the Pike National Forest approximately 45 miles west of Colorado Springs, and two miles south of Lake George, in Park County, Colorado. Camp Alexander is between 8200 and 8600 feet elevation. The camp area consists of hills, low mountains, and valleys covered by a mix of Ponderosa pine forests, high-altitude grasslands, and wetland vegetation along the lake and stream. There is abundant wildlife including black bears, raccoons, skunks, rabbits, squirrels, deer, elk, coyotes, snakes, and bald eagles.

 

The camp offers an outstanding summer camp program for scouts of all ages and experience.  From the first-year camper and early ranks program at the First Class Center, to an offering of 39 Merit Badges and Special Programs in a wide variety of activities including:

Registration Jotform 

Registration will be opened in January 2019.  An e-mail will be sent to the troop group e-mail.

 

 

Some Class Schedule Notes:

·      There are 4 activity periods in the day.  Note that some classes are multiple periods.

·      Camp A has some recommendations about difficulty: 1st year, 2nd year, etc. on the schedule.

·      A great program for scouts working on ranks Scout to First Class is at the First Class Center.  There is a 2-period class for Tenderfoot & Second Class requirements.  There is a 1-period class for First Class requirements.  

·      Some courses will require an additional fee.   Handicraft MBs and Shooting Sports MBs are the most common classes with fees.  The fees are listed on the class schedule chart.   

·      There are several higher-adventure activities for older scouts, including ATV (14+) and Mountain Boarding (12+).  There is also the Outback Adventure Programfor older scouts, which includes mountain hiking, mountain biking, mountain-boarding, and whitewater rafting.

·      There are adult training activities (IOLS, SM/ASM Trainings) requiring pre-registration in the jot form.

 

Whitewater Rafting Trip - Friday

Friday at Camp Alexander has an open schedule (no MB classes) and provides free-choice activities.  The Troop’s Whitewater Rafting trip will be Friday.   There is an additional fee for scouts and adults of $85 which covers transportation, wet suit, spray jacket, rubber foot booties, and a guide.   Encouraging everybody to join the rafting, it will be a camp highlight!  

 

Adult Participation

Summer Camp is not possible without adult participation and volunteers.  Adults wishing to attend should fill out the jotform too.  There are list of volunteer opportunities for adults.  Please select one or a few that you are interested.  We will assign adult volunteer jobs on first come first serve basis.

2019 Summer Camp Fee

**2019 pricing will be announced when Camp A 2019 Program Guide is published.**  

Based on previous summer camp costs, the current estimated total cost for this year summer camp is:

·      Scouts:   ~$730 ($360  camp fee + $320 bus + $50 incidentals) + rafting fee (if selected) + course-specific fees (for some courses)

·       Adults:   ~$645  ($295  camp fee + $300 bus + $50 incidentals) + rafting/courses (if selected)

This cost is based on the estimate that 2 buses will be needed for this trip.  The cost per person might go down or up depends on the number of scouts and adults sign up.  Also, this cost includes additional meals along the bus route and at camp.

 

·      First paymentof $300 will be due by early April.  (check to BSA Troop 848).  

·      Final paymentwill be due mid-May.  Will notify amount when finalized (headcount affects logistics costs, etc).

·      Can withdraw with full refund by May 1, 2019.

The troop offers partial or full scholarships for summer camp.  If there is a need, please contact Greg Meyer or Mike Rodriggs to discuss. 

 

Medical Forms

·      All participants will need completed BSA Medical Forms Part A, B, & C.  Needs to be signed less than 1 year from camp dates.   Link to forms can be found at bottom of troop e-mails. 

 

Swim Test

·      We will conduct swim test in advance.  More info to come . . . 

 

To Board the Bus . . . you’ll need full payment and medical form submitted in advance.

FAQ’s

1.  Why the $300 deposit and two payments?  The camp requires us to make deposit payments.  In fact, the Troop has already paid a deposit to confirm our reservation.  We are attempting to minimize the amount of bookkeeping and payment collection by reducing the number of payments to two.

2.  My son sold mulch.  I would like to apply that money to the Summer Camp registration.  Again, due to the timing of the camp payments, we must get the initial camp fee before the mulch sales are complete.  You may request money from mulch sales to be refunded to you, to the extent you have paid out of pocket for Summer Camp registration.

3.   Do adults need to complete a separate jot form from their sons?  Yes.

4.  Why do we travel far for Summer Camp?   The troop has a tradition of traveling to the top BSA Summer Camps to gain the best experiences for our scouts.  Camp Alexander is one of our scouts’ favorite summer camps . . . plus Rocky Mountain temperatures compared to Houston’s July heat & humidity.
